re: "Or, We Could Kill All The Pirates"

Lt Col P at OPFOR ("a blog dedicated towards expanding milblogging topics to include foreign policy, wargaming, grand strategy, and hippy bashing") discusses dealing with piracy.

Money quote(s):

"We have discussed this before, always with the same tone of disbelief. WTF, over? This is an ugly problem, but a simple one, and one that has a remarkably simple solution--

Kill all of the pirates.
"

"Why do we allow a handful of khat-addled assholes to dominate one of the world's most important sea lanes? We, the western powers, have sufficient naval units in the area to take care of the problem in very quick order. What we lack is the will. We apply an idiotically high standard of judicial due process to a situation that doesn't lend itself well to a judicial solution."

&

"Here's how it needs to be done. Oil tanker sends distress call, takes evasive actions insofar as it is capable. (Or better yet, armed men aboard oil tanker defend by fire.) Coalition forces despatch vessels and boarding parties. Pirates who survive ensuing gun battle are lined up by the rail and shot in the head, then dumped overboard. Pirate boats are burned. If their bases or villages on the coast can be identified, said bases are raided and destroyed. No fuss no muss, no ransom, no hostages, no skyrocketing costs."

It is interesting to note that for decades practically all the major ports in America, France and Britain had a gibbet and a gallow on the dock to serve as a warning of the consequences of piracy. And also a solid platform for those not hung outright at sea.

There is one infamous story of a Charleston underwriter and his family being "escorted" to witness the hanging of his son on the dock for piracy during the 1840's. And then having to walk past the dock for weeks until all the flesh had fallen from the exhibited body.

The US wishes to solve every other country's issues already... why wouldn't we step in and solve this one?? The plan seems easy and we've got the hardware and able bodied sailors/marines to make it happen.

Get it done.
