re: "Fischer: "One day we'll be the ones asking for help, and no one will help us" "

Joerg Wolf at Atlantic Review brings to our attention a Spiegel International interview of "former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer."

Money quote(s):

"The quote in the headline is from Fischer's response to a question on Afghanistan:

"I believe that the current German government missed an opportunity a year ago when the Canadians and other allies were under great pressure in the south and asked us for help. Despite the many risks, Germany should have stepped up to the plate. One day we'll be the ones asking for help, and no one will help us." "

Funny, but it's quite odd to hear this sort of criticism, from this source, of the current German government. It would seem equally applicable to the regime of which Herr Fischer was part.

Still, all contributions cheerfully received. Our longtime NATO ally is with us yet in Afghanistan, although their presence was definitely (at least by me) missed in Iraq. Fortunately there were more than 30 NATO and non-NATO "Coalition Partners" willing to cowboy up and share the load.

A couple of years ago I attended an (unclassified) briefing that outlined the shocking decline in German military strength and capabilities since the end of the Cold War. Perhaps Herr Fischer would care to comment on missed opportunities there as well.

Hat tip to Berlin Blogs for the link.
