One sailor has died, another is recovering and a third has been taken into custody after a shooting Thursday morning on a U.S. Navy base in Guam, a Navy spokesman confirmed Friday.

The shooting happened at about 8:20 a.m. Thursday at Camp Covington, a military area inside Guam Naval Base in Santa Rita.

The sailors were members of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 74, a deployed unit from Gulfport, Miss.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Navy spokesman Lt. Donnell Evans wrote in an e-mail in response to Stars and Stripes.

One sailor died at 2 p.m. Thursday at U.S. Naval Hospital Guam, according to Evans. That sailor’s name was being withheld Friday pending notification of family members, Evans wrote.

On Friday, the wounded sailor was recovering from surgery, Evans wrote. His name was being withheld “out of respect for his privacy,” Evans wrote.

The sailor in custody remained in confinement Friday at Andersen Air Force Base on Guam, Evans wrote. His name was not released.

The Navy provided no other details of the shooting.

The construction battalion provides military construction support to Navy, Marine Corps and other forces.

In times of emergency, the battalion conducts disaster control and recovery operations, according to the Navy’s news release.
