Dear Editor,
Unfortunately I did not see the letter written by the German ambassador but empathise with his situation. Ken Jones, like me, cannot tolerate the noise coming from deejays and their "entertainment", and like me he wonders why our law enforcers do not enforce the laws.
Stanford Bean calls for enforcement of misdemeanour laws. When my sleep is disturbed until 3, 4 or 5 am and the police station is closer to the source of the noise, why do I have to make a complaint to the station?
Why do the officers on duty need the breach of the law pointed out to them?
If the minority can make life hell for the majority and break laws, just let me know which laws I can break without any summons. Yes, zero tolerance. That is what is required in this country. New York introduced it to great effect: crimes were eliminated overnight.

So, recently Senator Harry Reid commented that the war in Iraq was lost, saying:
"I believe myself that the secretary of state, secretary of defense and — you have to make your own decisions as to what the president knows — (know) this war is lost and the surge is not accomplishing anything as indicated by the extreme violence in Iraq yesterday," said Reid.
Over at The Volokh Conspiracy they ruminate over Al Jazeera's reaction to the statement and it's effects on the war, saying:
"Maybe, as I said, the benefit of the statements exceeds their harm. And maybe the harm will be modest, because everyone -- among our enemies as well as among our military -- has already assumed that the Democratic leadership thinks this. Yet my suspicion is that the harm will be quite substantial indeed."
I believe militarily we won the war, but succeeding in Iraq will be a generation-long job, maybe two, like it was in Germany and Japan. To achieve that success, we much win in the political arena and the court of public opinion, not only on the battlefield.
So, from someone with your experience, do you think Sen. Reid's comments will have any effect on the troops in the field or the enemy? Good or bad? Just curious.
