PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) - Police searched yesterday for the kidnapped baby of a former member of a local Islamic group.
Eighteen-month-old Timothy Cumberbatch was snatched from his mother's arms Tuesday by men searching for his father, Nigel Cumberbatch, 26, a former member of Jamaat al Muslimeen, police said.
The kidnapping was the first this year in the twin-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. There were more than 200 abductions in 2005, more than 60 of which were for ransom, police said.
Tina Cumberbatch, 36, told police that two men wearing long robes and Muslim head coverings approached her in her yard and demanded to know her husband's whereabouts.
When she told them she did not know, the men snatched the baby from her. They told her they did not intend to hurt the child, police said.
Police said they questioned both parents for several hours. No ransom was demanded.
Jamaat al Muslimeen, known for a bloody attempted coup in 1990, has been accused by officials of many instances of shooting, kidnapping and bank robberies in Trinidad. Its leader, Yasin Abu Bakr, faces terrorism and sedition charges.
